On Sunday, Manchester United will meet Liverpool in early spring with one team chasing the title and the other seeking to put a silver lining on the storm clouds surrounding their season by claiming the scalp of a fierce local rival.
So far, so normal. The difference this year to most in recent history, of course, is the club with little more than considerable local pride to play for is Manchester United. The team looking to maintain their title bid, Liverpool.
Plenty has been written about United’s current problems, and perhaps not enough about Liverpool’s revival. But the encouraging news, for the neutral, is what their reversal in fortunes says for the wider health of the game.
