Per Mertesacker: Arsenal players wanted club to sign ‘cheeky boy’ Luis Suarez

Per Mertesacker says the Arsenal team were hopeful that ‘cheeky boy’ Luis Suarez would sign for the club last summer.

Suarez was subject of two offers from the Gunners after Arsene Wenger made him the Gunners’ top transfer target.

The Liverpool striker eventually stayed put, and has since signed a new contract at Anfield, but defender Mertesacker says he and the Arsenal team wanted the controversial striker on board.

‘Suarez is like a cheeky boy,’ said the German to the Guardian.

‘He looks like a cheeky boy who can really switch on and off how he wants to be, so that is really something. When he is on the pitch, what is going on around him doesn’t bother him.
