Facebook’s 10th birthday: The site for the shy that became an internet giant

Cant believe its 10 years already for Facebook. How time flies.


It began life ten years ago today as a means for shy students to get to know each other.

Dubbed ‘thefacebook’, the social networking website went live from programming prodigy Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard University halls of residence.

By the end of the year, Facebook, as it soon became known, had already expanded far beyond its college limits.

Today, it celebrates its tenth birthday having conquered the world.

Most of its 1.2billion active monthly users are outside North America and, if Facebook was a country, it would be the third largest in the world by population.

Chief executive Mr Zuckerberg said: ‘It’s been amazing to see how people have used Facebook to build a real community and help each other in so many ways.’
