Rail passenger caught with kilo of cocaine hidden in homemade leg cast

A drug smuggler was arrested after being caught with a large amount of cocaine in a very unconvincing plaster.

Daniel Ramirez was travelling from Chicago to California by train when he was approached by Drug Enforcement Administration agents during a stop in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

According to federal court records, Ramirez, appeared ‘increasingly nervous’ as he spoke to the agents, who reported that ‘his hands were shaking’, the Smoking Gun reported

He told investigators that he was taking the 41-hour Amtrak train trip to Chicago to visit a friend and had suffered a leg injury in a motorcycle crash.

But agents noticed his cast that was ‘uneven in texture, size and shaping not consistent with that of a cast applied by a medical professional’.

When Ramirez agreed to remove a sock, the lower portion of cast ‘began to crumble and fall off the bottom of his foot’.
